Back to School After the Holidays: How to Restart Strong
The holiday break is over, and it’s time to trade twinkling lights for fluorescent ones. As teachers, we know the first few days back after Christmas break can feel like a mix of excitement and chaos. But don’t stress—we’ve got this. Here’s how to shake off the holiday glitter and get back to business without losing your sanity.
Reflect, Recharge, Reboot
Before you even set foot in your classroom, take a minute (or five) to reflect. What went well before the break? What made you want to bang your head on your desk? Use these insights to make a game plan. Set small, realistic goals for the second half of the year. Bonus points if you write them down—you’re more likely to stick to them that way.
Tidy Up Like a Boss
Let’s face it: your classroom might still be rocking some post-holiday chaos. A rogue candy cane? A stack of papers you swore you’d grade over break? (Spoiler: you didn’t.) Take some time to tidy up before the students arrive. A clean, organized space makes you feel like you’ve got your life together—even if you’re still half-running on eggnog and cookies.
Warm Up Your Relationships
After a week or two away, your students might need a little help getting back into the groove. Start with a fun, low-stakes activity that lets everyone ease into the day. Ask them to share a highlight from their break or create New Year’s resolutions as a class. The goal? Rebuild that classroom connection without diving straight into equations or essays.
Routines Are Your Best Friend
The holidays may have thrown routines out the window, but it’s time to reel them back in. Don’t assume your students remember all the procedures—they’ve been staying up late and forgetting what day it is, just like you. Take a few minutes to review classroom expectations and ease them back into the rhythm of school life.
Don’t Forget About You
You can’t pour from an empty coffee mug, so take care of yourself. Get plenty of sleep, pack a lunch that isn’t 90% sugar, and give yourself grace if things don’t go perfectly on day one. You’re human, and just like your students, you’re adjusting too.
Fresh Start Energy
January is all about fresh starts, so lean into it. Try out that cool lesson idea you’ve been thinking about or tweak your classroom vibe to keep things exciting. This is your chance to shake things up and make the second half of the year even better than the first.
Welcome back, teacher friends. Let’s make this semester one for the books!
